
Artemis III Proves the Model Works. Now Washington Must Have the Will to Finish the Mission.
There is a reason the Apollo program still commands reverence more than a half century after Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Sea of Tranquility.1 It was bold. It was American. It was a declaration to the world, delivered not in a diplomatic cable or a United Nations resolution, but in the language of engineering, courage, and national will. Today, with NASA preparing to launch Artemis III in 2027 and China accelerating its own lunar ambitions, the United States faces a defining choice. We can seize this moment with clarity and commitment, or we can manage it to mediocrity. The history of great nations rarely forgives the second option.
Artemis III will not land astronauts on the lunar surface. That distinction awaits a later mission. What Artemis III will do is test the systems, rendezvous procedures, and multi-vehicle docking operations that future Moon landings depend upon. NASA has named the crew: Commander Randy Bresnik, Pilot Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency, Mission Specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas.
The mission will launch aboard the Space Launch System from Kennedy Space Center and operate in low Earth orbit, where Orion will rendezvous with commercial lunar landers developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin.2 It is the essential groundwork before boots touch lunar soil.
Critics who view this as a delay are missing the strategic picture. Artemis III is not a step backward. It is a precisely designed risk-reduction operation, and getting it right is the difference between a sustained human presence on the Moon and a catastrophic failure that would hand Beijing a propaganda victory of historic proportions. Republicans who understand defense and national security know this distinction well: preparation is not weakness. It is the foundation of victory.
The Stakes Are Geopolitical, Not Just Scientific
China is not pursuing the Moon because of scientific curiosity. The Chinese Communist Party has declared its intention to land taikonauts on the lunar surface before 2030.3 Beijing views space dominance as a dimension of great-power competition, a way to project technological supremacy and challenge American leadership in every domain that follows. If China plants its flag at the lunar south pole and establishes resource extraction operations before the United States returns, the psychological and strategic consequences will reverberate far beyond the Moon.
This is not alarmism. It is a reading of public statements, defense intelligence assessments, and decades of Chinese strategic behavior. The Moon is not simply a rock in the sky. It is the high ground of the 21st century. Water ice at the lunar south pole can be converted into rocket propellant. Whoever controls that resource controls the economics of deep space travel. That is why the Artemis program matters far beyond its scientific mission, and why delays and budget uncertainty are not simply management problems. They are national security failures waiting to happen.

The Republican Party has historically understood this. Ronald Reagan rebuilt American strength not just through military spending but through a confident assertion of American purpose. The Strategic Defense Initiative was mocked in the press and at cocktail parties, yet it fundamentally changed the calculus of the Cold War. Artemis deserves the same clarity of purpose. The Moon is not a budget line. It is a strategic objective.
The Public-Private Model Is Vindicated
One of the most consequential policy decisions of the past two decades was NASA’s shift to commercial partnerships for human spaceflight. Conservatives argued for this approach for years, and the results have been striking.4 SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk with private capital and built on competitive engineering rather than cost-plus government contracts, broke the Russian monopoly on American access to the International Space Station, drove down launch costs by an order of magnitude, and created an entirely new commercial space economy.

The Artemis III architecture, which relies on commercial landers developed through competitive contracts rather than a single government-built system, is the logical extension of that model. This is what good governance looks like: the federal government setting the strategic objective, providing anchor contracts and oversight, and then stepping back to let American ingenuity drive the solution.
Republicans who support free-market principles should champion this architecture loudly. It is empirical proof that the conservative approach to government works. The old NASA model produced the Space Shuttle at enormous cost and ultimately failed to deliver on the promise of routine, affordable access to space. The new model produces SpaceX. The contrast is not subtle.
Fiscal Responsibility Demands Accountability, Not Timidity
There is a legitimate conservative concern that must be named directly. The Space Launch System has been expensive.5 Some cost estimates for SLS development have exceeded $23 billion, a figure that deserves serious scrutiny. The Government Accountability Office and Republican members of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee have raised pointed questions about cost overruns and schedule slippage, and those questions are appropriate.
But here is the distinction that fiscal conservatives must hold onto: oversight and accountability are not arguments for abandonment. A parent who discovers their child is struggling in school does not simply withdraw the child from education. They demand better performance and apply the appropriate pressure. The same logic applies to Artemis. Demand transparency. Demand competitive alternatives for future heavy-lift requirements. Demand that every dollar spent on lunar return can be justified against the strategic objective.

It draws young people into engineering, mathematics, physics, and the applied sciences at a moment when American STEM competitiveness is under pressure from every direction. The engineers who will design the weapons systems, communication networks, and artificial intelligence architectures of 2050 are in middle school today. What they believe about American ambition and capability will shape the choices they make about where to invest their talents.
Newt Gingrich wrote about this dynamic extensively in his vision for American space policy, and he was right.6 The Apollo program produced a generation of engineers and scientists who went on to build Silicon Valley, transform American medicine, and create the internet economy. Artemis has the same potential if we commit to it seriously and pursue it with genuine ambition rather than bureaucratic incrementalism.
The four astronauts assigned to Artemis III carry more than their own ambitions aboard that spacecraft. They carry the expectations of a nation that has always believed it was capable of the extraordinary. Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas, and Luca Parmitano will not walk on the Moon on this flight. But they will prove the systems that will. And in proving those systems, they will prove something more important: that the United States of America does not yield the high ground to anyone.

Artemis III is not a perfect program. No government program ever is. But it is the right program, structured in the right way, pursuing the right strategic objective. The reliance on commercial partners reflects sound conservative governance. The international cooperation with European allies reflects smart alliance management. The deliberate risk-reduction methodology reflects the kind of serious, professional execution that distinguishes great enterprises from reckless ones.
Republicans should get behind Artemis with full voice and full conviction. They should demand accountability where costs have spiraled. They should push to accelerate the timeline wherever commercially competitive options allow. And they should never, under any circumstances, allow budget anxiety or political short-termism to create a vacuum that Beijing is more than ready to fill.
The Moon awaits. The question is whether it will welcome Americans or Chinese. History is watching, and it tends not to be kind to nations that hesitate when greatness is within reach.7
