
For a few dazzling decades, the skies belonged to the trijets—those iconic three-engine aircraft that once defined the golden age of jet air travel. With one engine on each wing and a third mounted in the tail, trijets like the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, and Boeing 727 symbolized a blend of engineering ambition, design elegance, and commercial pragmatism. The placement of the third engine offered better redundancy in case of engine failure, a key selling point before twin-engine reliability improved. Trijets were often able to fly transatlantic routes that twins could not. In their heyday, you couldn’t visit an airport without seeing a Delta TriStar or an American Airlines DC-10 taxiing for takeoff, with that signature howl from the tail-mounted engine echoing off the terminal windows.
Yet, these aircraft were also notoriously complex and expensive to maintain. The middle engine was difficult to access and added weight and drag. Fuel economy was good—but not great. And as fuel prices surged in the late 70s and early 80s, economics started to shift against the trijet.

By the late 1980s and early 90s, engine technology had advanced to the point where twin-engine aircraft could reliably fly over oceans and remote areas. Why run three engines when two will do?
The trijet’s decline was sealed when airlines began replacing their fleets with more efficient twins. Boeing discontinued the 727 in 1984 after producing nearly 1,800 units. The DC-10 was replaced by the MD-11 (itself a trijet, but the last of its kind), which never quite caught on the way its predecessor did. Lockheed bowed out of the commercial aviation market entirely after the L-1011. The economics no longer made sense: higher fuel burn, more maintenance, fewer seats compared to larger twins—all at a time when airline margins were razor thin.
The Ghosts in the Sky: Trijets Today
While most commercial trijets have been retired from passenger service, they live on in other roles. FedEx and UPS continued using MD-11s and DC-10s for years in cargo service, thanks to the aircrafts’ high payload capacity and range. The U.S. Air Force still uses variants of the DC-10 as aerial refueling tankers (KC-10 Extenders), though these too are being phased out in favor of the more modern Boeing KC-46.
You’ll still find the occasional enthusiast snapping photos of a trijet at an air show, or catching the last few MD-11 freighters on FlightRadar24 before they disappear for good. But their days are clearly numbered.

So why do aviation nerds like myself—and let’s be honest, millions of passengers over the decades—still get misty-eyed thinking about trijets?
Because they were cool.
There’s something inherently charismatic about a three-engine jet. It looked powerful. It sounded different—an aggressive, throaty roar from that tail engine as it spooled up on takeoff.
